Undergraduate Council Academic Advising Committee (Faculty Senate)

“Central to the mission of academic advising at the university is teaching students to understand the meaning of higher education, teaching students to understand the purpose of the curriculum, and fostering students’ intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning. Through individual, collaborative relationships with academic advisers, students are best able to define and implement sound educational plans that are consistent with their person values, goals and career plan.”


  • to support academic advising as part of the teaching mission of the university and the teaching role of faculty.
  • to coordinate across academic colleges and units the underlying principles of best practice in academic advising as outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog and university academic policies.
  • to provide a forum for discussion of academic advising policy, procedures and processes for faculty, advising administrators, enrollment services administrators, and student affairs administrators.
  • to recommend policy to the Undergraduate Council on matters that pertain to academic advising and areas related to academic advising.

Academic Advising Leadership Group (AALG)


To provide a forum for college academic advising directors and faculty coordinators from across the university to:

  • advocate for exemplary academic advising practice within the context of the university’s academic advising vision, mission, goals, and learning outcomes
  • coordinate academic advising initiatives and policy implementation across colleges that support student retention and success
  • make policy recommendations to the Undergraduate Council’s Advising and Academic Policy Committees
  • address the Advising Action Plan, which is a part of the Vol Vision Strategic Plan, Priority #1—Undergraduate Retention and Graduation
  • serve as advising advocates and leaders within the respective colleges and across campus

Tennessee Academic Advising Association (TennACADA)

TennACADA is the primary organized group of professional and faculty advisers and student support personnel at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The association is an allied member of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and supports the goals and programs of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

TennACADA was created as a forum for sharing ideas and exchanging information related to academic advising at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. A primary goal is to provide its members with opportunities for professional development and peer support, ultimately building a network of resources to enhance student success. Equally important is the representation and promotion of the interests of academic advising within the larger university community.

All UT faculty, counselors, administrators, and staff with an interest in advising are welcome to join. Please contact us to be added to the member distribution list.

The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA)

The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students. NACADA provides a forum for discussion, debate, and the exchange of ideas pertaining to academic advising through numerous activities and publications. NACADA also serves as an advocate for effective academic advising by providing a consulting and speaker service, an awards program, and funding for research related to academic advising.

The National Academic Advising Association evolved from the first National Conference on Academic Advising in 1977 and has more than 10,000 members representing all fifty states, Puerto Rico, Canada, and several other countries. Members represent higher education institutions across the spectrum of Carnegie classifications and include professional advisers/counselors, faculty, administrators and students whose responsibilities include academic advising.

NACADA’s mission is to…

  • champion the educational role of academic advisers to enhance student learning and development in a diverse world
  • affirm the role of academic advising in student success and persistence, thereby supporting institutional mission and vitality
  • anticipate the academic advising needs of twenty-first century students, advisers and institutions
  • advance the body of knowledge on academic advising
  • foster the talents and contributions of all members and promote the involvement of diverse populations

  • Member Career Services: Free listing of position openings in academic advising by geographical area
  • Consultants Bureau: Experts to assist institutions interested in enhancing campus advising services at reasonable rates
  • Publications: Semi-annual refereed Journal, quarterly e-newsletter, monthly highlights on advising
  • Special Publication and Monograph: Discounts on print media that address current advising topics
  • DVDs & CDs: Discounts on DVDs and CDs that focus on adviser training and key issues
  • Professional Development Opportunities: NACADA conferences, institutes, and seminars at reduced rates to members
